The original casting notice read: "Trudy is a former childhood classical dancer. She is estranged from her domineering father and ailing mother. She develops a close bond with younger sister, Rainbow, after a series of circumstances forces them together. Talent must have some dance training and the ability to move well. "
The audition required me to read sides from two scenes, dance salsa and ballet. I would have never thought that my eleven years of classical ballet training would come in handy at this time of my life, but I guess it was meant to be.
"Sacred Spaces is a family drama centering around Trudy, a former childhood dancer and her sisters, Cassandra and Rainbow. Together they discover the depth of their family ties, reawakened dreams and the power of faith."
Our rehearsals were pretty intense and some authentic tears were shed due to the dynamic between myself and the roles of Trudy and her Father. Trudy and I have many similarities which made it difficult to separate myself from her, but (i had to keep reminding myself) I'm NOT her. Trudy and I share traits of sarcasm, independence, confidence with our full figured bodies, and self preservation. In fact, one of my lines was: "I'm a Sexy Beast!" (Clearly this is typecasting at its best) However, circumstances have caused Trudy to distance herself from her family and her faith. I can empathize but I can't relate to that, particularly at this time in my life when I'm holding on to my faith with all the strength I've got.
As the lead, I was required to perform quite a bit, and also break out the ballet shoes to Chassé, Pas de Bourrée, Jeté and more! (Don't worry, no Pas de Chat as I was not about to let "all this" look THAT awkward) I can't thank Ura enough for having the faith in me to bring Trudy to life. I originally submitted for a small supporting role, but at Ura's request I prepared for Trudy instead. I was stretched exactly in the direction that I needed for both my personal and professional growth.
Thank you Ura Sanchez, "Trudy" , the cast, my mom for those ballet classes and continued support, my dad for his support and to my friends that attended the reading of "Sacred Spaces".
(geeez all that for a stage reading...imagine what an Oscar speech would be like?!?!)
So sweet! <3
