A few weeks ago I looked around the empty studio where I take yoga class and noticed what a beautiful space it was. I daydreamed about how it would feel to dance ballet there. Last night after yoga I put on my ballet shoes and thoroughly enjoyed the space as a Ballerina. Eleven years of training, more years ago than I care to admit. I felt empowered and began my adagio and then piqueé turned diagonally across the room. My body has changed considerably since my days in ballet but as my friend Sara Alloy was so lovely to point out, "There is no such thing as a 'dancer's body', there are just bodies that dance."

Three years ago today, I had the opportunity to work on a series of exercise videos featuring the "non-traditional body types" we're accustomed to seeing in work out videos. The purpose was to get women of various ages and levels of fitness to motivate full figured women to begin to move their bodies. Moving your body is the first step to a healthier life, and not everyone is ready for Jillian or Shaun. Sometimes you need baby steps to get you prepared for the insanity. Rochelle Rice, and actor/model Allyshia Hamilton Rochelle led us through Cardio, Strength Training, and Stretch at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. |
